Where should I live?

At the top of most peoples’ minds when finding a suburb to live in is budget, transport, crime rate and distance from the CBD. These are all attributes that can be measured and ranked, but these aren’t the only factors that make up where you should buy or rent.

While studies and data can give an accurate depiction of what makes a suburb desirable, real-life experience can tell a different story. A suburb can be ranked the most livable suburb but not necessarily the most lovable…

1.Where the suburb is located to things that specifically matter to you

This includes being near, or far away from, friends and family, and being the optimal distance from work.

2.A sense of community

How friendly local people are, social inclusiveness and any connections from a cultural basis that matter to an individual and their identity.

3.The ‘quality’ of the facilities and services provided

While you can measure the number of shops, or the restaurants, you can’t always measure the quality – which is much more subjective.

4.Sensory factors that there’s little data for

Noise and air pollution can quickly change how someone feels about a suburb, but detailed data doesn’t always exist for these elements.

5.What an ‘ideal’ demographic is

While data is available about the age, income and ethnicity of people in different areas, there can be little consensus about what an “ideal” is and this makes it an immeasurable factor.

Although proximity to local amenities, transport and local schools should certainly be high on your list when looking to move suburbs, it’s important not to over look the lovable factors such as the community as these are really what makes you love where you live!
