How to downsize the right way!

The thought of downsizing from a five bedroom home to a two bedroom apartment can be terrifying! How could you possibly fit 25 years of treasured memories from a huge family home into a smaller apartment with little to no storage space? For all the hoarders out there, this is going to be hard to take…you’re going to have to say goodbye to some of your stuff, BUT the good news is that with some smart planning you can certainly take with you the things that you treasure and want to keep.

What do you want to keep?

Start with writing a list of all the items in your home you want to keep and absolutely can’t live without. You will be surprised at how many items you may be able to leave behind, donate to charity or family and friends.

Start going through your belongings early

If you start going through your belongings such as your wardrobe, kitchen cupboards etc at least 3 months prior to moving, come moving week it will be a breeze!

Do you really need 10 mixing bowls?

Over the years we ALL tend to collect more than 1 (sometimes 10) of the same item! We started with 1 mixing bowl but 25 years down the track we now have 10! Ask yourself if you really need those 10 mixing bowls, 5 spatulas, 4 cutlery sets and 5 chopping boards! The answer will most probably be no! Only keep what you need!

Make sure you apply this rule to EVERY room in your house.

You don’t need to throw it all in the bin!

Lots of items that you no longer need will be able to be recycled, reused by someone else, sold or donated! Your trash might be another persons treasure.
